At Ball State, DSF was home base on Friday evening for food and fellowship. We have continued to gather as a group since college. It was unique to have such a large house, church, and grounds near the campus where we could have all types of activities.
Spelunking in science club, Halloween parties, Road Rallies for school staff, Cookouts, Godspell, Graduation parties (grads came because we served meat and they were tired of veggies and cake), Church and choir parties,
Many things are special and we often stop and document with photos. Every Christmas, we have taken a family picture in our stair well. On the other hand, some traditions don't get photographed.
Bob originated a grant project in order to get a videodisc in his physics classroom. Alice worked several years with ABC Election Predictions through the League of Women Voters. Alice has also served as an Elder in church.
DSF, Shuttle Atlantis last launch, Total Eclipse. We have done many videos but linked these three as they are worth watching.
Occasionally I take a picture and feel that it should be saved and not lost. Sometimes I make them into enlargements, note cards, or put them on the web. Here are a few pictures that are special to me.
Dr. Wagner was our faculty sponsor. Doc and Lois considered the college group to be their family and they were always there for support.
Noel Gala get together at Dan and Sharons house in Martinsville.
We have held some creative parties
Our first party, friends came dressed as their favorite famous couple. The next year we had a party at the local doctors office in BBurg and couples came dressed as their favorite disease. (Pic above) Another year involved a road rally to haunted cemeteries.
Nothing is more fallish than hotdogs over a fire with cider, s'mores, and dutch oven desserts. Living in a woods always made this special.
Experiences outside our box of familiarity
Alice and Bob went with the Science Club to southern Indiana and toured a cave (Buckner) where we went down a sinkhole and then had to crawl on our bellies until we got to larger rooms and streams in the cave. Bob carried camera equipment and took pictures
When we were much younger, we were in a production of "Godspell" at Speedway Christian Church. It was great fun.
Alice and Bob have served as camp counselors for church camps and Young Life at Silver Cliff in Colorado. We even played guitar and led singing in the mess hall to all the campers at Barbee for an hour while the State Police came in and searched during a bomb scare. Bob took kids to Quetico Canada on an Eco canoe camp. Bob also took Scott and his troop to scout camps many times
Bob plays a variety of musical instruments and makes a lot of them. He is not good but can play tunes. Bob used to play the saw every year for his physics classes. This picture shows his first concert in North Salem where he was trying to impress his mother-in-law to be.
Before covid, Alice and Bob were starting to do various craft shows where they would try to sell the beads, jewelry, and lapidary stones that they make. Currently, they sell items at Gallery On The Square in Danville, Indiana.
In Jan., 2009 we were offered tickets to Pres. Obama's first inauguration. (Bob took the picture above) We were amazed at how great a weekend we had and the attitude, civility, inclusiveness, and great behavior of 1.8 million people. Sadly, the world has changed and our grandkids may never have the positive experience we had in D.C.
Gary C. and Bob created a videodisc for schools in Indiana We trained in Hollywood, received a national award in Boston, and presented to the NSBA. Our families help film and lug equipment around. We filmed in zoos at Indianapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, and Chicago. This started as a simple idea and became a multiyear project.
Alice, Bob and Dave P. attended a Sky Lab launch and just missed seeing John Glenn at the airport car rental at 2 am. Alice and Bob got to see one Shuttle Launch from near the Cape. Bob, Tonee B., and brother Bill got to see the last Shuttle Atlantis Launch from the causeway on the cape. (see video). Tickets for the Atlantis launch were purchased at a Pittsboro garage sale.
Bob took his telephoto and put together this video of the launch. It was an amazing sight.
Images of friends and words of wisdom from Dr. Wagner
Alice, Bob, Scott, and brother Bill traveled to Southern Illinois to watch the eclipse and were lucky enough to have clear skies. A few miles away, thousands gathered at a stadium with tv crews and had a cloud pass over and hide the whole event. We were hosted by niece Carolyn W. at their backyard in Carterville, Illinois.
Solar flare and total eclipse. This photo was taken during the few seconds of an eclipse when you take the sun filter off of the camera.
On his 80th birthday, I took several pics of dad outside the farm house. This one has always been one of my favorite. Maybe because he let me take it and posed instead of walking away.
I was in Florida and resting while my brother Bill walked the beach. After a few quiet minutes, the sand in front of me started moving and these two sand crabs (Ozzie and Harriet) opened up their home right in front of my towel and camera lens.
In Aug. 1967, after backpacking for a week on the AT, we walked through downtown Gatlinburg on a Friday evening headed toward a shower at a campground. My how the traffic has changed. Or - maybe we really needed a shower. We found the bears had used all the hot water in the mountain streams.
Barn Hinge at a Bed and Breakfast in Ohio. I have used this several times on stationery. It is one of my favorite still life photos.
My secretary Louise C. got a gift from her family for a balloon ride. I chased the balloon with my car and was able to get this picture just as the sun set.
Erin checking out my camera while I was trying to photograph baby Olivia. Alice took this pic and obviously got a cuter picture than I did.
The view of Denali from Talkeetna that is visible 30% of the time and we saw it 7 days in a row - even from Anchorage.
I was walking the beach and spotted this Heron sneaking up behind the fisherman to steal shrimp out of his bait bucket
The Grand Canyon has beauty but this age old tree at the edge of the South Rim has a power and majesty of its own.
Baby foxes are great fun to photograph. Here are two out of six pups.
Our backyard on a foggy morning back on Richwood Dr
Tree from a famous Georgia O'Keeffe painting at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. I would love to return and sharpen my photography skills.. It was am amazing trip..
Alice and I spent a day with Steve Bundy, a prof. photographer and we stood close to the Rio Grande river waiting for the long horn sheep to get closer. This Ram got about 20 ft. from us, jumped on the rock and then looked at us and posed.
Sometimes I use a tripod. On this evening in Sedona, AZ, we were on a mesa and the sunset made our self portrait really special.
Mt. Denali from the back seat of an 8 passenger small plane. I took pictures out both sides of the plane at the same time. Camera in one hand and phone video in other hand.
The sun had gone down. It was a simple sunset in beautiful country. Two of us with tripods stayed in the meadow trying to out wait each other. About fifteen minutes after sunset, the sky started to glow and the color spread much farther than my lens could capture. The orange was in the west and the sky behind me was turning pink. It was an amazing evening. Then it got totally dark and the Milky Way Galaxy slowly lit a path across the sky.
Spectacular - Oct 20, 2017
The sun was setting over one of the keys and we would not be able to see it set on the water. The silhouettes of the boats however draw interest to the picture. I took a few shots from a pier and then went back and enjoyed a great dinner with my wife and two of our travel friends.
Equally Spectacular - 2/28/20 We didn't know the world would be shut down for Covid within a few days
Checking my fishing pole down at the canal before sunrise, I could photograph four planets along with palm trees. Planets were Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Earth. The palm trees were on Earth. The planets were visible until the sunrise colors brightened and daylight arrived.
Differently Spectacular - 2/26/21 We isolated at a VRBO in Florida instead of staying in Indiana
We stopped at Summit Sanctuary on our way home from Florida and took a 180 degree panorama of the lodge, Grandfather Mountain, and the developing afterglow from the sun setting behind the Blue Ridge mountains.
Peacefully Spectacular - 3/09/21 We were headed home but it was good to get away and to be physically and spiritually refreshed.
